The Basics

The Clé de Cartier was introduced at SIHH 2015. The case, available in a number of sizes, has a soft profile somewhere in between ’round’ and ‘cushion’. While at first glance the look is not unlike watches from the late sixties and early seventies, both details and finish are distinctively modern and Cartier. It’s name is a reference to the clever locking system of the crown – the ‘key’. The Clé de Cartier Mysterious Hours builds upon the brand’s long tradition of mysterious clocks, with the hands seemingly floating in thin air through the use of a crescent shaped movement and clever gearing. Reference WHCL0003 has a palladium case set with 469 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 4.13 carats. The white gold dial set is with 359 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 1.21 carats and an additional 43 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 0.42 carats are found on the folding buckle.

About Cartier

Cartier logo

Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by master jeweler Louis Francois Cartier. His son Alfred took over in 1874, but it would be the grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques lay the foundation for to building the brand into what it is today. The company would remain in hands of the family until 1972. While primarily a jewelry brand, Cartier has a rich and deep history when it comes to watches. It … introduced its ladies wristwatch well before the end of the 19th century, while the first men’s watch was designed in 1904 at the request of famous aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The latter would serve as the inspiration for the 1911 Santos wristwatch, one of many icons of the Parisian brand. Cartier is part of the Richemont group.
